Hurghada - What a Dive!

Watersports are central to Hurghada’s colossal appeal, however, while sailing, windsurfing, fishing and swimming are all important local pastimes, it’s snorkelling or scuba-diving here that really sets the pulse racing.

Hurghada is jam-packed with diving centres and, with competition fierce, you’ll find that not only are prices extremely reasonable, the equipment is state-of-the-art, the staff are friendly and there’s plenty on offer. Make sure you use a PADI 5 star IDC diving centre, there are stacks available.

Diving off Hurghada is concentrated around the copious islands that surface from the Red Sea. There’s everything from shallow reefs to coral gardens and huge drop-off walls with caves and the islands provide shelter so diving can still be enjoyed in rougher seas.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a virgin to diving or a seasoned pro, most centres will offer everything from PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water to Divemaster, Rescue Diver and Instructor Development. They’ll also endeavour to match you with divers of a similar skill, so you’ll enjoy the experience all the more.

Most day trips will incorporate a dive in the morning, lunch and drinks, with a different dive site in the afternoon. As many of the centres are part of hotel resorts, you can all sit around afterwards with a beer in hand and discuss the thrills. Just don’t forget to take a camera.

If certain family members don’t fancy taking the plunge, they’re usually welcome to tag along and enjoy the trip on the boat, and larger families or groups may even like to hire the boat, equipment and crew for just themselves – which is surprisingly inexpensive.

The key is to find a diving centre that you like and trust, then immerse yourself in the experience; whether you choose a guided day trip, a night dive a wreck, or just a snorkel trip, it’s sure to be an experience you’ll never forget.
