1799. The Al Fahedi Fort is built
1833. The Maktoum family settles in Dubai
1835. Maritime truce signed between the Trucial states and Britian.
1892. Dubai falls under the protection of Britain
1903. British Indian steam navigation company steamships begin calling at Dubai.
1946. Dubai’s first bank opens
1950s Oil is discovered in the Trucial states.
1962. The famous Dubai landmark The clock Tower Roundabout is built.
1963. The Al Maktoum bridge is built.
1966. Commercial quantities of oil is discovered off the coast of the UAE + Dubai’s first hotel opens.
1967. The Shindagha tunnel is built under the creek.
1970. The Al Fahedi Fort is converted into the Dubai museum.
1971. Britain withdraws from the gulf and Dubai becomes independent. The United Arab Emirates is born with HH Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan as the leader.
1973. Dubai and the other Emirates launch their single currency the UAE Dhiram.
1981. The GCC (gulf cooperation council) is formed with the UAE as the founding member.
1985. Dubai based airline Emirates is established.
1990. After the death of his father, Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum becomes the ruler of Dubai.
1997. The UAE population hits 2.62 million 70% of which are expats.
1999. The doors of the world famous Burj Al Arab opens to the public.
2000. Dubai internet city, the worlds first free trade zone for e-business is completed in just 364 days.
2001. Construction starts on the Palm Jumeirah.
2004. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan dies and is succeeded as ruler of the UAE by his son Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
